Amsterdam, the city of canals and flowers

Back in march 2022, we went to Amsterdam for 3 days. These days ended up being intense but without us even realisering it. We went from Copenhagen airport at 6 am Friday morning and where standing at the hotel, right outside Amsterdam at 9 am. So we had 3 full days, since our flight Sunday was at 10 pm. We had some amazing days and the weather was sunny all weekend.

What to do and see in Amsterdam city center

So with its charming canals and beautiful Tulips and other flowers everywhere, this wonderful city makes it to the recommendation list! So if you got this far, we are only getting to the good point now. Amsterdam is a busy city with a lot of people and bikes. So a small advice from me to you. Watch where you are going. Bikes can appear out of nowhere.

nhow Amsterdam RAI Hotel

nhow Amsterdam RAI Hotel lookout view

I was blown away when i walked into this hotel. It just caught the eye, before you even got through the door. The building looks so cool and unique. Imagine 3 boxes on top of each other, but the middel box is turned 45 degrees !
So strange, but cool !
When you got inside the hotel, it was like a color pallette has puked everywhere.
The bight colors of pink, green and blue just took over the entire space and with its amazing decorations and lounges i was sold !
When we got our room on 16th floor, my jaw dropped. Less colors, a huge African woman drawn on the wall and a tub right next to the king sized bed. The view from the tub was stunning and perfect to watch the sunset. This is out of the question, one of the most romantic hotels i´ve ever stayed in. Click here to see the pictures and maybe book it yourself. psssssst… The restaurant on the top floor is outstanding as well.

Amsterdam boat trips

Boat trip in Amsterdam canals

We took the metro from the hotel and into the city center of Amsterdam. After we´ve been walking around for some time and had something to eat, we agreed on that a boat trip could be nice. So after using google to find some good boat trips, prices ect. We decided to go to the Ann Frank house.
Right outside her house was a lot of different boats with different prices.
We choose one where it was possible to get something to drink and sit comfortable with space between people.
Our tour took about an hour and it was really nice to see the buildings from a different angel as you do from the canals. Some of the boats have storytelling involved in the tour and others are just for relaxation.
Just remember to have cash, some of the boats dont have card terminal. If you want to make sure to get a boat, you can make a reservation right here.

Red light district

Amsterdam Red Light District by night

We di plan to walk through the red light district, but this day, we did it by accident. After our boat trip we were just walking around, talking and taking photos with all the other tourists.
All of sudden, half naked women appeared in one of the many windows and sex shops were everywhere. There was no doubt in our minds where we had ended up. We walked up and down the street to see everything and decided to return when it got dark, so we could see all the red lights.
When we got back, later that night, there was people everywhere and it was really crowded. But besides that, it was a great experience, also a bit strange to see all these women dancing around in the windows. Its hard to explain, but go see it for yourself. The story behind it is also very interesting. You can do your own research about the red light district and the meaning behind it here.

The Jordaan

The Jordaan district

As we walked through Amsterdam, we reached this destination. The canals were narrower and there was a lot of trees and flowers. On each side of the canals, we saw houses back from the 17th century. This part of the city was very charming and offered a lot of cafés, designer boutiques and specialty shops. Here you´ll for example find Anne Frank´s house, the lindengracht market (only on Saturdays) and cute and small cheese stores. This is also one of the most safe and cosy neighborhoods in Amsterdam. If you wanna know what else the Jordaan has to offer, you can read about it here.

New Dutch Amsterdam

Breakfast at restaurant The New Dutch in Amsterdam

When we left the hotel Saturday and again took the metro to the city center, we wanted to find some breakfast. We walked around for an hour because everywhere we went, the restaurants and cafés were full. Finally we found this place, just next to one of the small canals. This place has some of the most delicious breakfast, and the portions were big… and since we loooooove food, we couldn´t complain. the inside of the place is really nice, but If you get the chance to sit outside, do it. When the sun is shining and the sun reflects in the water while you sip your coffee and take another bit of your croissant, you know life is great! Maybe its a good idea to make a reservation, we were lucky, because there was also a lot of people when we got there. But check out there menu and book your table. You won´t regret it !

Remember your good walking shoes

hidden gems walking tour

The best thing you can do, is to remember a good pair of shoes for walking. You will be walking a lot because there is so much to see in Amsterdam. A lot of the streets and alleys might look the same, but in a blink of an eye it will change. If a store looks special or strange, go in there. Explore as much as you can. Maybe you´ll be the one to discover new hidden gems in Amsterdam.

Does Amsterdam has more to offer?

The short answer is, sure. Amsterdam had a lot of good qualities and maybe we can help you to plan your next trip.
